Jummah Khutba Feedback (24.04.09)

I prayed Jummah at the East London Mosque today and Sheikh Abul Husain’s khutba was based on the topic of Istighfar and the ways in which we should seek the forgiveness of Allah azza wa Jal. We know that when we transgress and commit sin, we must repent to Allah SWT and we must be sincere when it comes to repentance. There are a few verses that talk about this:

And those who, when they do an evil thing or wrong themselves, remember Allah and implore forgiveness for their sins--Who forgiveth sins save Allah only?--and will not knowingly repeat (the wrong) they did. Surah Al Imran (135)

If any one does evil or wrongs his own soul but afterwards seeks Allah's forgiveness, he will find Allah Oft-forgiving, most Merciful. Surah Nisa (110)

Saying, 'Ask forgiveness from your Lord; for He is Oft-Forgiving; He will send rain to you in abundance; Give you increase in wealth and sons; and bestow on you gardens and bestow on you rivers (of flowing water). Surah Nuh (10-12)

"(And to preach thus), 'Seek ye the forgiveness of your Lord, and turn to Him in repentance; that He may grant you enjoyment, good (and true), for a term appointed, and bestow His abounding grace on all who abound in merit! But if ye turn away, then I fear for you the penalty of a great day: Surah Hud (3)

We know of the story of the man who killed 99 times and when he asked a learned man in his community if he would be forgiven and the man proclaimed that he wouldn’t, he killed him also and his tally went to 100. So he asked another Alim and he told the man that he hasn’t escaped the forgiveness of Allah and that he should go to a place where it would be better for him. However on the way of his journey he passed away and the both the angel of Hell and the angel of paradise descended. They debated on who was going to take him and in the end they decided to measure how far he was from his destination of good and how far he was away from where he came from. He was closer to the place where he was told to go and for that reason Allah SWT forgave him and now he is among the people of Jannah. In a hadith Rasool SWAS talked about the best way to do itighfar and mentioned a dua known as Sayyid Al Istighfar:

Shaddad bin Aus (ra) narrated that the Prophet (saw) said, “The most superior way of asking for forgiveness from Allah is:

Allahumma anta Rabbi la ilaha illa Anta Khalaqtani wa ana abduka, wa ana 'ala ahdika wa wa'dika mastata'tu, A'udhu bika min Sharri ma sana'tu, abu'u Laka bini'matika 'alaiya, wa Abu'u Laka bidhanbi faghfirli fainnahu la yaghfiru adhdhunuba illa anta

‘O Allaah, You are my Lord, none has the right to be worshipped except You, You created me and I am You servant and I abide to Your covenant and promise as best I can, I take refuge in You from the evil of which I committed. I acknowledge Your favour upon me and I acknowledge my sin, so forgive me, for verily none can forgive sin except You.’

The Prophet (saw) added. “If somebody recites this invocation during the night, and if he should die then, he will go to Paradise (or he will be from the people of Paradise). And if he recites it in the morning, and if he should die on the same day, he will have the same fate.” [Sahih Bukhari, Volume 8, Book 75]

So reciting this dua has great significance for us we should endeavour to memorise this dua and recite it in the appointed time. We need to check our deeds and our Amal, how much repentance have we done for the countless wrongdoings that we have committed in life? If we know that we haven’t been turning to Allah SWT and asking for forgiveness what hope do we have in attaining salvation? The key thing here is to be sincere and turn to Allah with all our heart and ask for forgiveness because no one else is able dissolve our sins except Allah SWT.
