AssalamuAlaikum today I prayed jummah at the East London Mosque and Shaykh Abdul Qayyum’s khutba was based around Satan and his challenge to the children of Adam, that he will try and lead us astray. Allah azz wa Jal has said in many verses in the Quran that Satan is an open enemy for us and that we should never take him as our friend.
So by deceit he [Satan] brought about their fall. And when they both had tasted of the tree, their nakedness became apparent to them and they began to cover themselves with leaves from the Garden. Their Lord called out to them, "Did I not forbid you that tree and tell you both that Satan is your open enemy? (Al-A`raf 7:22)
This is one example of how Satan managed to trick our Father and Mother, due to his jealousy and trickery Adam AS and Hawa AS where taken out of heaven and placed on this Earth. So here we are many years later still continuing our struggle against our main enemy. Shaykh Abdul Qayyum listed a few ways in which Satan tricks us:
1. He will try and make us people of no Iman i.e. Kaafir. There are many people who do not taste the sweetness of faith and fail to see the beauty of being a Muslim. Satan will maintain this within their hearts and lead Muslims to apostasy.
2. Those who he can’t lead to faithlessness, he will try to establish innovation in their life. So anything that hasn’t been established by Rasool SWAS, their life will be full of these innovations. Rasool SWAS has warned us of this and this may lead to Shirk.
3. He will try and establish major sins in our lives. So not doing our five daily prayers, not wearing Hijab etc. If we do not do repent after these sins, then we will fail in our battle against Satan.
4. Then comes the people who commit major sins, however after committing these major sins the people repent. So Satan establishes the minor sins for them and makes it easy for them to commit these sins. In some cases the individuals do not even know that they are committing sins. This is vital for us to understand because Rasool SWAS has said that the minor sins are so dangerous because they build up higher then mountains!
5. So if Satan fails in the above what he does is he makes the things that we are allowed to do excessive in our lives. Eating is an example, but what Satan does is he makes us eat more then we should and we miss opportunity to do good deeds because we are too busy eating. Sleeping is a must; however Satan makes us lazy and makes us sleep excessively.
6. The next way is that he makes us choose between deeds that have less benefit and deeds that have many benefits. So we tend to choose the easy way out and choose those righteous acts that have less importance. Although they are righteous acts, they are not as righteous as other acts that we could be doing.
7. If all the above fails then Satan resorts to all out attack on the individuals. All the Prophets and Sidikeen have not escaped this; Satan will engage openly and get the enemies of Allah against these individuals. It’s up to the individuals to stay strong and fight the storm, we know people like Ibn Tayimiah spent many years in jail and we know many these people will be attacked and vilified. This hardship will be proof that you are doing the right thing and it is imperative that the Muslims stay strong in this path and not falter.
Shaykh Abdul Qayyum finished off by making a Dua and reminding us to seek refuge from Satan in Allah azza wa Jal.
